Transportation of bulky and dangerous goods

Freights exceeding standard sizes of cargo equipment (2,45 – width, 13,6 - length, 3,1 m - height) and weighing over 24 tons are called bulky or oversized.  Transportation of bulky goods demands special equipment and also receiving coordination on transportation of bulky goods on the route.  For such transportations, as a rule, the route is carefully selected, considering height and width of bridges and protections, national regulations of transportation of bulky goods in transit countries.

In some countries, depending on dimensions of the transported freight, it is required not only coordinate with road services, but also provide trucks with escort vehicles (police, road services, etc.). Special low-bed trailers-platforms are applied to transportation of bulky goods, also bulky goods are often transported by railway and sea transport or by the so-called multimodal transportations when in the course of transportation one or several means of transport (for example: automobile and sea, automobile  and railway transport) is used .

To dangerous goods, according to standard classification, belong the goods possessing properties which might under certain conditions be harmful to the environment, people, and also material property.  The category "Dangerous Freight" in standard classification is divided into several classes.  Transportations of such goods are carried out according to international agreements, specially equipped vehicles with the appropriate admission provided, and drivers involved to transportation pass special training and have the corresponding certificate.  Besides for dangerous freights there are requirements for packing and marking.

The UNO identifies the following 9 classes of danger goods:

1 class - explosive materials and subjects;

2 class - the gases compressed, liquefied and dissolved under pressure;

3 class - flammable liquids;

4 class - flammable substances and materials;

5 class - oxidizing substances and organic peroxides;

6  class - toxic and infectious substances;

7 class - radioactive materials;

8 class - corrosive substances;

9 class - other dangerous substances.
